Obituary

BETTY LOUISE (PRESTON) ZURCHER, of Piqua, has passed away at the age of 88. Betty was born September 25th, 1928, in Piqua, Ohio, to the late Emma Jane (Lair) Preston and Forest B. Preston.
 
She is survived by her daughter, Amelia Zurcher Alexander of Piqua; two grandchildren, Angel Alexander Murphy (Brian) of Woodridge, Illinois, and Nicholas Alexander (Ruth) of Piqua; and four great-grandchildren, Cady Murphy, Mark Alexander, Colden Murphy, and Enzo Alexander. She is also survived by Joyce Shelby Walker, who Betty raised and loved as her own, and her family. Betty was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Patsy Preston Polhamus (Marion).
 
Betty was a member of the Salvation Army for many years, where she belonged to the home league, was a leader for the Girl Guards and Sunbeam program, and served as activities helper for the Summer Fun Club. She also volunteered as a Brownie leader and 4H advisor. Betty belonged to the YWCA Wives Club for many years and was a member of the ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) and the ABPW (Association of Business and Professional Women). In her later years, she was an active member in the Piqua Leisure Club and the Sidney Senior Center. Betty loved to travel and never stayed home if she had the chance to go somewhere.
 
Betty was the manager of the Piqua Motel for 25 years. After her retirement, she was the co-owner of Betty’s Bagels, Charley’s Steakery, and Hershey’s Ice Cream at the Miami Valley Centre Mall. Betty also owned several rental properties in the Piqua area.
 
Funeral services will be held Friday September 8, 2017 at 1:30 P.M at MELCHER-SOWERS FUNERAL HOME, Piqua, with the Pastor Jon Woodward, Pastor J.D. Woodward, II, and Pastor J.D. Woodward co-officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery, Piqua. Calling hours will be Friday from 11:30 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. at the funeral home.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Miami Valley Chapter 31 W. Whipp Road Dayton, OH 45459.
